Well, I got round to booking my forthcoming Dubai trip, going to be in Edinburgh and not Dublin at the time so will be leaving from EDI via Frankfurt with Luftie. Staying south of Edinburgh and won't have my car so bugger trying to get along to GLA via public transport for the direct flight!
Interestingly spoke to 2 of my old colleagues who work in the Gyle today and they are both going to Dubai in the summer, again both leaving via EDI and going via Frankfurt. Both live in Corstorphine and as both put it, "they couldn't be arsed taking the car through to GLA and prefer a quick taxi hop to their local airport".
There is quite a sizable amount of traffic between Edinburgh and Dubai at the moment (as told to me by friends in Dubai) and I wonder if a fair bit of this will continue to use EDI via European hubs. The bulk of inbound/outbound pax between Edinburgh and New York mostly bypassed the GLA service these last few years in favour of using their local airport albeit via London or a Euro hub.
I wonder if most airlines realise that the public transport from Edinburgh and Glasgow to each others airports is a total joke and the road infrastructure if driving is woefully inadequate?
What amazes me though is the amount of people I know from Edinburgh who do all their flying from PIK, mostly because of price but also because of Ryanairs in your face advertising. My father in law came over to visit me recently from PIK with Ryanair and actually drove past EDI as he didn't know you could fly to DUB from there!!!!
Most of my family fly on 2 or 3 holidays a year and have never flown from EDI ever including my father in 30 years of flying to Spain! Outside business colleagues I would say that 90% of my friends and family have never flown from EDI and always fly from GLA or PIK. I am talking maybe 30 people of between 2 to 5 flights a year who live in Edinburgh city itself! I wonder what the ratio is across the city!
I am surprised DUB doesn't have a Dubai service yet (hopefully it will get one before my next again trip in September as I will be in Dublin again).
Hypothetically, I wonder what GLA & EDI would be like now if say 5 years ago they were sold into independent hands? I am betting the variety of flights would be significantly greater than now for both. It always amazes me when BAA scare of budget airlines from GLA/EDI with high pricing yet look at STN and there is Easyjet at LGW as well. Apart from the very small regionals, every airport in Britain has at least one budget or low cost hub operation. Easyjet once said that EDI was to small a catchment for a hub and the Scottish market was in general to small. Why then are Ryanair doing so well at PIK? Easyjet seem quite happy to fly 18 return legs between EDI and London daily though!
My inital couple of line posting has turned into an aimless rant!
