Full Version: If you were to start an airline....

Some rich guy with more money than sense decides he wants to start an airline, and he puts YOU in charge of planning.

What kind of airline would you start? Traditional or low cost?
What aircraft will you use?
European or long haul flights?
What would the service be like?

For me, I would go for a european based version of JetBlue. Customer service has to be number one, and service on board pretty good, while still maintaining fairly low prices, probably similar to easyjet level. The key for me would be to offer a decent range of buy on board drinks and food, while still trying not to hassle customers and constantly try to sell them things (no scratchcards on this airline!)

Flights would be on an A319/A320, and would be to European city destinations with a good mix of business and leasure traffic.

Initial bases would possibly be Stansted or Gatwick. While both airports already offer a wide choice of flights, it is all with low cost airlines like easyjet and ryanair. By offering a higher level of service I would try and poach passengers away from BA/LHR onto a better priced product of similar service levels, at a less congested airport.

So... what kind of airline would you start up?

That's a tricky one, a/c wise I think RYR have got it right with the 737-800, EZY and GSM have got the 'lo-co' 'cabin product' right, but the best service I've had on an airline was with British Airways,

not any time recently I'd say....

Good to see that Gav was paying attention when he was reading this!

My own airline would....

fly Embraers, or Airbuses at a pinch
minimum free onboard service exactly like Air Berlin, pay for anything other than a soft drink and a sandwich
allocate seats
a minimum of a daily service to any destination served. fuck this 3 days a week bollocks.
web/self service check in
all in fare structure on website
clear change/cancellation policies, with the ability to modify bookings online
be available on GDS systems
FF program offering lounge access and priority boarding
sexy air hostesses that offer "inducements"

For me, I would go for a Indian based version of Air Scotland. Customer service can be very dodgy, I don't care.
Service on board suspect while still maintaining fairly steep prices. Keeps out the riff raff of course.
The key for me would be to offer a full range of Indian food and drink, with scratchcards, topless bingo and
a pub quiz every Thursday evening at 8pm

Flights would be on a TriStar or a DC-10 fitted with chaff dispenser, to any destination.
Single class seating, backward facing seats for additional safety incase of the
occasional emergency landings (brace brace!) .

Initial bases would possibly be Baghdad or Kabul. A new, untapped market. Very little competition.
(Well, maybe the odd RAF Hercules or VC-10)

By offering this level of service I can poach passengers from the British Army.
Why use NATO German AF A310's and Spanish AF B707's to move troops?
