To help get us get through to March I thought that we could look at our shortest commercial flights. (Ryanair Prestwick - Belfast City looks tempting for £1!!!).

I would like to start with the following:

G-BTZN BAE 146-300 SN, Edinburgh - Glasgow in 1994, 12 minutes
G-JEDD DHC.8 BE, Jersey - Guernsey in 2002, 9 minutes
G-ATBJ S.61N BS, St Marys - Tresco in 2002, 3 minutes
D-ADBP B.737-300 DI, Cologne Bonn - Dusseldorf in 2003, 15 minutes

Anyone got Westray - Papa Westray?

Did Washington Reagan - Philidelphia in September, I didn't time it but the pilot said the flight time would be 22 mins.

Loganair hold the distinction of operating the shortest scheduled flight route in the world - the journey from Westray to Papa Westray takes just two minutes, with the distance between the two islands being only slightly greater than the length of the runways on each of them.

1) Renfrew to Edinburgh, 1965, BEA, Handley Page Herald, 12 minutes

2) Edinburgh to Glasgow, 1967, British Midland, Viscount, 12 minutes

3) Teesside to Newcastle, 1969, Channel Airways, HS748, 13 minutes

4) Malmo to Copenhagen, 1971, SAS, Convair 440, 7 minutes (Is this the shortest international scheduled service - Sweden to Denmark - I suspect was rather than is, now that they have built a bridge.)

5) Gibraltar to Tangiers, 1986, Gibraltar Airways, Viscount, 13 minutes each way ( Europe to Africa - shortest inter-continental service?)

6) Vancouver to Victoria, 1987, Shorts 360, 12 minutes

7) East Midlands to Birmingham, 1994, BAe146, 12 minutes

I'll have to check the flying log. I reckon among the shortest COMMERCIAL flights must be GLA-EDI or back on assorted Loganair or on BA Viscount, or Finnair when it used to stop at Mikkeli on the way from Savonlinna to Helsinki (SVL-MIK being a whole 58 miles, and it
being a DC9 rather than a viscount or any of the Loganair types). Another short commercial flight probably doesn't count as it was not
the scheduled route.... US Air DC9 Boston - Philadelphia having to divert back to Boston as the plane was gubbed. Reckon the flight
would have been a bit longer than the SVL-MIK anyway by the time we got back on the approach and the likes.

Shortest non commercial has to be AS350 from stand 19 at Glasgow to Area 80 (just by where the Loganair hangar is). Ha.

OK. Found my shortest commercial flight. It wasn't Mikkeli but Varkaus that the Savonlinna to Helsinki flights stopped at.
I have a flight logged between them in 1982 taking 0:08 in a DC9-14. Much shorter than the Glasgow to Edinburgh ones in
viscount and assorted Loganairs. Record GLA-EDI is 0:11 in a Jetstar but that wouldn't count as commercial anyway.
Another couple of Finnair ones are short, between Kemi & Rovaniemi a couple of times at 0:12 on DC9-15 but 0:08 takes
the biscuit.

The US Air diversion back to Boston was a flight time of 0:14 ... another DC9.
