Full Version: Lost Luggage
Taxiway Alpha > General > The Lounge

Anyone know how effective Globespan or their handling agents are at getting luggage back to its owners. Came back from Malaga last night but my luggage didnt. The nice lady at the airport was 100% confident of its return but then she wouldnt tell me different would she.
Fortunatley I had ny tracker number with me and it sounded staright forward from the rep, but you hear some horror stories.

Only problems Ive had before were interesting I suppose, early 90s when Lufthansa started flying from Edi. They lost my luggage twice on the way back. Both times it was with me the next day, I just dont feel so confident this time.

I guess it depends how it was lost. Chances are either the aircraft was over its weight limit and luggage was left behind, or it was checked in too late to make the flight, or fell off the conveyor belt.

In the first instance Globespan should get it on the next flight out. In the second case its probably the handling agents fault, so it shouldnt make a difference whether you flew GSM or BA - theres just as much chance of it being found and returned.

All you can do is cross your fingers and hope, but it should turn up. When I flew to Bali last year the check-in agent only checked my bag as far as Singapore. The staff at the airport were not much help, and when I phoned the next day to see if it had been located, they told me there was no sign of it in Singapore, and it wasnt on that days flight. When I returned to the hotel that evening I saw my bag sitting in the hotel reception.

Thanks for that Nighthawk. As it was the only bag "lost" and by no means the biggest/heaviest Im assuming it wasnt weight, and we were 2nd or third to check in for the flight, so heres hoping it fell off the truck and is waiting to come on tomorrows flight. Unfortunatley the direct hotline number given to me by FG to their handling agent is an automated message telling me to e-mail them of my query, one is just bursting with confidence about this.

Anyhoo a question to the boards, Im assuming hold luggage checks subjected to security inspections after being checked in. Our article of luggage which did make it through to Edinburgh had been clearly subjected to an inspection after we had checked it in.

My dear brother in law (who knows everything about anything anf F-all about anything) is chipping in saying he always locks his hold luggage and no-one has any right to inspect it without your presence to prevent tampering,
This I could understand, but at the same time Im sure I read somewhere that you were advised not to lock Hold luggage
as inspections were carried out and if need be locks would be forced.

Anybody in the know, as I`d love to shut the BIL up, but at the same time if hes right some buggers had a right good rummage through my case after check in and I`ll bet thats where the other case was left.

Your Dear BIL is going to be in the smelly stuff if transitting through the US. He will not be allowed to lock his case. If it is locked they will break into it. However I think there is some type of specilaised lock for the US which they will allow.

I never lock my hold bags but I never put anything of high value in the hold, just clothes and shoes etc. I don't think it's a good idea to use expensive luggage, it's like a big neon sign, expensive luggage, expensive goodies inside.

Unusual to lose your bags on a point-point service like GSM. Hopefully you'll get it back ASAP.

Thanx for the info I thought I sniffed BS.

Was a bit surprised as Malaga was not busy at all on Wed night and its not a hub airport. Anyhoo eventually I got a hold of Alba ground agents who had located it and it was to go onto todays flight to Edi. But it would have been well into next week before they could deliver as its in "suspended" status and will requires checked as its unatended, then it gets cleared to them who follow it up with me. As Im only 5 miles from the airport they were happy to allow me to deal direct with FG. Unfortunatley the lass on the desk there couldnt find it at the desk, but it may still be awauting clearence as the flight got in at 14:00.
So it looks like tomorrow, will be glad when I do actually get it, but at least things looking in the right direction.

The lo-co operators won't be too keen on taking the cost of delivery to your home address. I am not surprised you are having to go to the airport yourself. However it will be easier picking it up yourself rather than going through the poor excuses for not dropping it at your house.

Aye they seemed quite pleased when I offered to collect myself. Which to be honest at this moment in time suits me as long as I get it and Im not too far from the airport anyway.
When Lufthansa lost my luggage twice I then lived in Dunbar and it was taxied from GLA to Dunny no questions asked.

Luggage safely reunited.
